The Kaminski Family has called Poway home since 1961. Stan and June Kaminski, along with their daughter Marsha and the rest of the family, opened Kaminski’s in 2009, right in the heart of Poway. Kaminski’s offers an authentic BBQ house with Southern Hospitality. We smoke our meat in hickory wood- it’s delicious and messy the way BBQ should be!
June Kaminski was raised on a farm in Washington, North Carolina, which is famous for its “Hog Heaven” slow smoked pulled pork, served with a clear vinegar based sauce. June’s daddy, Edward Hardison, a farmer, cured and slow smoked beef, chicken and pork in his barns serving up delicious BBQ for the hungry farm hands. June was called Miss June by her daddy and she not only developed a love of savory BBQ from him but southern manners and hospitality as well.
Stan Kaminski is from Hamtramck, Michigan, a little Polish community in Detroit. His father, Stanley, owned a butcher shop and grocery store where he made fresh smoked sausage as well as delicious ribs and brisket. It was in his fathers butcher shop where Stan learned the secret to savory BBQ.
Marsha Kaminski grew up in the restaurant business, and from the time she was in the first grade she helped the family run the restaurant. By the time Stan and June sold Kaminski Park, Marsha had worked her way up the ranks from dishwasher to Operations Manager. Marsha was quickly hired by Starwood Hotels, and held the position of Outlet and Bar Manager for the Sheraton Harbor Island. Marsha was nominated three times for Hospitality Employee Of The Year for the City of San Diego.
Stan and June Kaminski came to Poway in 1961, thanks to the US Navy and they never left! In 1965 they bought an existing restaurant on Poway Road called ‘The Totem Pole’, where they offered grill your own steaks, however June grilled most of them! In 1972 the restaurant was remodeled and renamed ‘The Poway Mine Co’ The restaurant was truly a family affair, the kids, JR, Barbara, Debbie and Marsha, were all well versed in the art of dish washing, busing, serving and cooking. The Mine Co offered ribs, steaks and spirits with lots of good times and memories. In 1992 the restaurant once again went thru a transition and became ‘Kaminski Park Sports Bar and Grill’. They served North Carolina pulled pork, ribs and steaks until 2000 when Stan and June decided to retire. The business was sold but the Kaminskis retained the property. In 2007 a terrible fire destroyed the building. Stan and June, along with daughter Marsha decided to rebuild. They combined their love and knowledge of BBQ to open Poway’s first authentic BBQ house. “We hope that our unique style of cooking and our southern hospitality will keep you coming back for more!”
1090’s Scott and Billy Ray held a Smack Down Wings Contest and Kaminski’s wings “These Ain’t No Sissy Wings” won! If you haven’t had our buffalo wings, you gotta try them. These wings are huge!! They look like Pterodactyl wings! First we smoke our wings with hickory wood, then we fry them up crispy and toss them in our buffalo sauce. Our sauce is hot and tangy leaving your mouth satisfied, not on fire. We serve the wings with our house made cool Ranch dressing with some carrots and celery on the side. Come in today and try them!! But be warned, these ain’t no Sissy Wings!
We use about 12 hickory logs per day.
Brisket & pork are smoked for 12+ hours, ribs & chicken 2+ hours. Capacity is 1000 pounds per day.
Each meat type is dry rubbed with their own type of herbs & spices that complement them. After smoking, the meat needs to rest before slicing & trimming.
We use hickory wood instead of oak & manzanita because it is much hotter & pungent, which in turn seals in the juices- making our meats tender and smoky.
Our BBQ style follows more the tradition of Texas & Carolina wherein, we slow smoke our meats rather than rush the process, taking up to 12 or more hours. We then finish the meat on the fired grill & top with our homemade BBQ sauce. Our BBQ sauce originated in our family after a friendly competition between family members. We had homemade recipes as well as other sauces from around the country. We conducted a blind taste test and son in-law Scott Merkley, married to daughter Barbara, created the winning recipe! Scott created a sauce that is sweet and tangy with a little kick on the back side. Our sauce is so good, some of our customers have told us they want to drink it!
Some BBQ restaurants have a different process wherein they put the meats in the oven for a period of time & then finish them off over a wood fired grill and skip the slow smoking process. The key to good BBQ is to take your time & let the aromas & flavors of the wood slow cook your meats which melts the heavy layers of fat & muscle that is inherent in pork & brisket, leaving you with fork tender BBQ meats.
If you haven’t had our buffalo wings, you gotta’ try them. These wings are huge! They look like Pterodactyl wings! First we dry rub our wings in a secret recipe of herbs and spices. We then smoke our wings with hickory wood. Hickory wood burns hot and pungent, allowing us to seal in the juices. Then we fry them up crispy and toss them in either our buffalo sauce which is hot and tangy leaving your mouth satisfied, not on fire, or our BBQ sauce which is sweet and tangy with a little kick. We serve the wings with our house made cool Ranch dressing with some carrots and celery on the side. Come in today and try them! But be warned, these ain’t no Sissy Wings!
Hi, my name is Marsha Kaminski. I am part owner and manager of Kaminski’s. I am one part of the three generations of the Kaminski Family who work at our restaurant. My parents, Stan and June Kaminski grew up in family business and always worked hard to help their family and I was eager to help my family! I grew up in the restaurant business and started as a dishwasher in 1972 at Nine years old, I used to stand on a beverage crate so I could reach everything. I learned how to cook at fourteen. I would do the dishes as fast as I could then I would work behind the food line with the cooking staff while training. I would go back and catch up on the dishes and jump back behind the line to learn how to cook! I started Serving at Eighteen and Bartending at Twenty One.
My favorite menu item is the Amazing Melts, House Salad topped with Brisket and our Delicious Mud Pie! My favorite beverage is our House Made Sangria, it is very refreshing and delicious!
I am a volunteer Basketball Coach at Poway High School. I have been an Assistant Coach with the Girls Varsity Basketball team for the past Nine years, and love every minute of it! I take pride in how much Kaminski’s supports our local community.
There are so many things I appreciate about working in a family restaurant. I love how hard my family and the entire staff work. The staff at Kaminski’s is my extended family! Our cooks and dishwashers, the heart of the house, Rock! My other extended family is our wonderful customers!! I am so thankful for their support all of these years!
Having the chance to create an amazing restaurant with high quality delicious food and work with my Mom, Dad and the rest of my family means the world to me!
