Southern Hospitality

The Kaminski Family has called Poway home since 1961. Stan and June Kaminski, along with daughter Marsha and the rest of the Kaminski family, will be opening Kaminski’s BBQ in the heart of Poway. Kaminski’s will offer Poway its first authentic BBQ House with Southern Hospitality!

Our BBQ Has Some Roots

June Kaminski was raised on a farm in Washington North Carolina, which is famous for its “Hog Heaven” slow smoked pulled pork, served with a clear vinegar based sauce. June’s Daddy, Edward Hardison, a farmer, cured and slow smoked beef, chicken and pork in his barns serving up delicious BBQ for the hungry farm hands. June was called Miss June by her Daddy and she not only developed a love of savory BBQ from him but Southern Manners and Hospitality as well.

Stan Kaminski is from Hamtramick Michigan, a little Polish community in Detroit. His Father, Stanley, owned a butcher shop and grocery store where he made fresh smoked sausage as well as delicious ribs and brisket.  It was in his fathers butcher shop where Stan learned the secret to Savory BBQ.

Marsha Kaminski grew up in the restaurant business, and from the time she was in the first grade she helped the family run the restaurant. By the time Stan and June sold Kaminski Park, Marsha had worked her way up the ranks from dishwasher to Operations Manager. Marsha was quickly hired by Starwood Hotels, and held the position of Outlet and Bar Manager for the Sheraton Harbor Island. Marsha was nominated three times for Hospitality Employee Of The Year for the City of San Diego.

Good Eats in Poway

Stan and June Kaminski came to Poway in 1961, thanks to the US Navy and they never left!  In 1965 they bought an existing restaurant on Poway Road called ‘The Totem Pole’, where they offered grill your own steaks, however June grilled most of them! In 1972 the restaurant was remodeled and renamed ‘The Poway Mine Co’ The restaurant was truly a family affair, the kids, JR, Barbara, Debbie and Marsha, were all well versed in the art of dishwashing, busing, serving and cooking. The Mine Co offered ribs, steaks and spirits with lots of good times and memories. In 1992 the restaurant once again went thru a transition and became ‘Kaminski Park Sports Bar and Grill’. They served North Carolina Pulled Pork, ribs and steaks until 2000 when Stan and June decided to retire. The business was sold but the Kaminskis retained the property. In 2007 a terrible fire destroyed the building. Stan and June, along with daughter Marsha decided to rebuild. They combined their love and knowledge of BBQ to open Poway’s first authentic bbq house. “We hope that our unique style of cooking and our Southern Hospitality will keep you coming back for more!”
